The Awatere Valley is a cooler and drier sub-region of Marlborough that produces some of its most prestigious wines. A palate primer, this smooth Shiraz proves how Australia’s signature red grape wildly over-delivers with its sunny personality and sun-drenched juiciness. Think vivid blackberry notes and perfect parcel of spicy, sweet black fruits, raspberry notes and long, lingering finish.

It is nicely balanced with soft, velvety tannins. One to complement the tenderness of a juicy steak or served simply with a cheeseboard.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Screaming Devil Cotes de Provence AOP, £13, Centra

For those who enjoy Rosé wine this is a real treat. Perfumed white peach, bright mango, and passion fruit aromas jump from the glass – along with some rhubarb notes on the nose. A really lively vibrant palate, a fresh and saline structure, zesty length, with intense aromas. It might be a bit on the pricey side for some, but worth it.
