November 21 is Beaujolais Nouveau Day. Here’s two worth trying... TTD Beaujolais-Villages Coteaux Granitiques 2018, Beaujolais, France (£8, Sainsbury’s)

Beaujolais-Villages hails from the steep slopes to the north of the region and the appellation is made up of 38 villages – granite soils lend the wines their juicy, fleshy character. This offers waves of blackcurrant and blueberry flavours, with sweet spice and a liveliness and fruity freshness that’s enhanced by a silky finish.

With their floral bouquet and elegant, silky, ripe fruits, wines from the hillside village of Fleurie are considered the most feminine and refined of the Beaujolais Crus. Otherwise known as ‘The Queen of Beaujolais’, this entry level example shows all the pretty raspberry and violet notes, with plenty of ripe red berry and strawberry fruit and some savoury structure and well-balanced acidity on the finish.

This is one of those wines which can be enjoyed with food... or simply on its own. The nose shows cirtus notes, underpinned with aromas of fresh herbs and blackcurrant leaf. The palate is full, lively and balanced with a long, crisp mineral finish. It goes really well with seafood, chicken, salads and pastas. It would make a good all-round Christmas wine...
