I STUMBLED upon this excellent Netflix Original movie while browsing the 'new releases' section last week.

It was spotting the name 'Macon Blair' in its credits that got my attention: Blair was the lead in Jeremy Saulnier's superb revenge thriller Blue Ruin and also featured in Saulnier's excellent punk rock seige flick, Green Room.

I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore marks the actor's debut as a writer/director and is a must-see for anyone who enjoyed his work in the aforementioned pictures, with which this cool little film shares a certain skewed sensibility.

Melanie Lynskey (Two And A Half Men, The Shield) stars as Ruth, a hard-working loner who's feeling increasingly at odds with the seemingly compassion and courtesy-free world around her.

Incensed by a burglary, Ruth decides to take a stand against those who cross her – including neighbour Tony (Elijah Wood), a martial arts and New Wave Of British Heavy Metal-obsessed oddball who's been allowing his dog to crap on her lawn.

However, it turns out that Tony isn't actually all that bad, and the pair form an unlikely alliance in an attempt to retrieve Ruth's stolen property – which may have been liberated by a member of a mobile mini-cult operating out of a van driven by the sleazy Marshall (Jesus Lizard howler David Yow).

Funny, violent and touching without being mawkish, I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore is an indie gem that suggests Macon Blair has a bright future behind the camera as well as on-screen.
