This summer, Hillsborough Castle and Gardens have been transformed into the Hundred Acre Wood as part of a new immersive literary experience aimed at encouraging children to develop a love for reading.
Created by Historic Royal Palaces, the charity responsible for Hillsborough Castle, in partnership with Disney and the Royal Literary Fund (RLF), the event has seen the grounds reimagined as a whimsical Winnie the Pooh trail, complete with a ‘Hunny Hunt’ and live storytelling from 10 celebrated children’s authors.
Until August 31, families are invited to follow in the footsteps of AA Milne’s beloved characters with a charming trail that winds through the gardens.
Young adventurers can help Pooh track down 10 missing ‘hunny’ pots scattered throughout the landscape - because, true to form, he’s forgotten where he left them.
Each Saturday, the trail will be brought further to life as a different author hosts a storytelling session in the magical setting of Owl’s Book Corner.
Audiences can enjoy readings from classic Winnie the Pooh tales alongside excerpts from each author’s own children’s books.
The line-up includes Jane Riordan, author of Winnie the Pooh Meets the King and Once There Was a Bear, as well as Royal Literary Fund Fellows such as Sheena Wilkinson, Amanda Swift, Jasbinder Bilan, Sophie Kirtley, Jim Beckett, Anna Wilson, Teresa Heapy, Maisie Chan and Michael Mann.
Each writer brings their own unique storytelling style, offering an inspiring experience for children and grown-ups alike, combining the timeless charm of Pooh and co with contemporary tales designed to spark imagination.
The adventure begins at the castle entrance, where visitors will collect a trail map, pencil, and of course, a Pooh stick.
Along the way, they’ll encounter themed stops including Piglet’s Cosy Burrow, Rabbit’s Garden, and other spots inspired by the Hundred Acre Wood.
After completing the trail, children can collect a special Winnie the Pooh sticker as a memento and head to the gift shop to find a cuddly Pooh Bear to take home.
Families can also enjoy a selection of themed treats and refreshments at the on-site Tea Room.
With Kids Go Free to the gardens all summer long, the event offers a perfect day out filled with fresh air, family fun, and storytelling magic.
