Belfast restaurant The Barking Dog to close after 15 years in business

BELFAST restaurant The Barking Dog is to close this week after almost 15 years in business.

Chef proprietor of the Malone Road venue, Michael O’Connor, said: “It’s just become impossible to keep the doors open."

In a statement posted on social media on Monday, he confirmed Sunday (May 14) will be the venue's final day of trading.

Mr O’Connor blamed a combination of soaring costs, staff shortages and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the hospitality industry.

“Ultimately, it’s been a battle for a number of years now especially that just doesn’t seem to have any other result,” he said.

“Unfortunately, I know I’m not alone in this, with other friends in the industry having to make the difficult decision to close their businesses recently, as extenuating circumstances can simply make your working life untenable.”

Recent research showed the rising costs of doing business in Northern Ireland has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard.

Mr O’Connor said he had made the decision “with an incredibly heavy heart”.

“I’d like to thank all the customers that have walked through the doors over the years and bought into the Barking Dog and its style of dining and service,” he said.

“There are so many regulars who will be sorely missed, but please know that you’ve meant the world to me and this restaurant.

“Some amazing staff have graced the floors of this building over the years, with some going on to have huge success in this industry. It’s been a pleasure to watch you Pups grow and develop into absolute stars.”

The restauranteur encouraged patrons to visit “and say farewell” and encouraged customers with vouchers to use them up.

“The restaurant will be open this week as normal, from Thursday to Sunday. After that, the Barking Dog is away to live on a farm,” he added.
