THE electric vehicle charging start-up Weev has opened its first hub in Co Donegal.

The company has partnered with the McKeever Hotel Group to install chargers at Dillons Hotel in Letterkenny.

Weev burst onto the scene in April 2022, announcing plans to invest £20 million in 1,500 new electric vehicle charging points across Northern Ireland.

Last month, the Belfast firm revealed a £50m finance deal from Octopus Investments, which it said will enable it to install thousands of chargers over the coming years.

The new Donegal site marks its first across the border.

Weev chief executive, Philip Rainey, said the decision to install the hub in Letterkenny followed calls from politicians and businesses highlighting the lack of public charging stations in the area, and in the border region in general.

“Our aim is to make EV charging more accessible than ever before by rolling out a wide-ranging EV charging network for drivers that is fit for purpose, maintained, and supported locally,” he said.

“We are pleased to officially open our first charging hub outside Northern Ireland as we aim to grow our network across the island.

“EVs represent a new era for driving, and Weev is supporting the motor industry’s transition towards a greener, more sustainable future.”

Robert McElhinney, general manager at Dillons Hotel added: “We welcome tourists from across the country and beyond, and increasingly, they are arriving in electric vehicles.

“Now we are able to provide them with EV charging but also answer a need for infrastructure that the wider Donegal and north-west region has been crying out for.”
