High Flyers: Business is so cool for skater mum Daniela

Daniela Morelli
Daniela Morelli

In the High Flyers spotlight this week is Daniela Morelli, sales and marketing director at Morelli's award winning ice cream business

What was your first job?

I studied media studies at tech in Ballymoney and went straight into the Morelli’s family business afterwards, working in the factory and shop in Portrush. I then took some time out and sold cars for two and a half years in Bushmills, until returning to Morelli’s Ice Cream. Since I came back to the business, I’ve been focused on expansion during what’s been a really exciting time for us.

What qualifications do you have?

I didn’t go to university. I have a BTech in media studies, which led me to freelance writing for trade magazines and writing a book to promote the centenary of Morelli’s in 2011.

What do you attribute your success to?

It’s all about experience and learning from mistakes. I learned so much from my parents and grandparents, who all have such great work ethic and inspired me to reach my goals.

Who do you look up to in business?

I always look up to people in business with a similar background to myself. I really admire Lord Rana, who founded Andras Hotels. He moved here with his family from India and set up the largest hotel group in Northern Ireland.

How do you get the best out of the people who work for you?

Communication is so important in the workplace. I also like to set out objectives and ensure everyone is on the same page. This helps to get the best out of people.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?

I think that many businesses in the hospitality industry have struggled with produce deliveries and processes since Brexit. However, the silver lining in this situation is that we’re encouraged to purchase locally.

What website or app could you not do without?

Vinted, without a doubt. I love trying to find hidden gems!

What was the last book you read?

Stanley Tucci – Taste, my life through food. I would highly recommend it.

What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?

Food, specifically Italian food. I also have a passion for Italy in general.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.

I like to call myself a skater mum. No one put this in the parenting guidebook on how to be a ‘cool mum’, but I like to think I’m pretty cool.
