IRISH fuel forecourt retailer Maxol has started work on two redevelopment projects in north Belfast and Downpatrick.

The family-owned company said the work at the Edenderry Service Station on the Crumlin Road and the Downpatrick site will represent an investment of around £3.8 million.

Maxol said up to six new jobs will be created in Edenderry, where the £2.3m development will produce a retail store 70 per cent larger than the former premises, built on land the group acquired in 2021.

The refurbished site is expected to reopen in mid-November.

Meanwhile, a £1.5m investment in Downpatrick will create an expanded Spar store.

Maxol said the projects involve new technology to reduce its carbon footprint, including low energy CO2 refrigeration and heat recovery from refrigeration.

Maxol Group chief executive, Brian Donaldson, said: “These are significant and important developments that will transform both service stations and ensure that when the projects are complete, our

valued customers can shop locally for all their daily needs in a modern, vibrant, sustainable and welcoming environment.

"Both Maxol Edenderry and Maxol Downpatrick are very much part of the community, operated under licence by local people, John and Sharon Bailey and Pamela Turnbull along with their staff teams.

"As part of our investment plans, we are delighted to be upgrading each site with the latest food concepts and convenience goods ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our customers. We are thrilled to see the work at an advanced stage to make this happen.”
