A NEW all-island wind-generated electricity record of of 4,584 MW was reached at lunchtime last Saturday, according national electricity grid operator EirGrid.

The record high was reached at 1.15pm, and was equal to 86 per cent of demand across the island at the time, it said.

It surpasses a previous record of 4,489 megawatts reached in February last year.

"For over 24 hours from Saturday morning, engineers in our control centres in Belfast and Dublin managed a power system that comprised over 70 per cent wind power," Eirgrid chief executive Mark Foley said.

Wind energy hit a peak of 96 per cent of all-island demand for electricity at 0.30am on Sunday morning, the operator added.
