A BELFAST developer has been given permission to refurbish one of the oldest buildings on Wellington Place in the city centre, in a new office and restaurant project.

The listed building at 7-9 Wellington Place is one of just three original buildings on the street that date back more than 200 years.

Manet Property Developments has secured planning approval for its proposal to bring much of the vacant building back to life.

The plans provide for a café/restaurant, with the three floors above divided between office and break-out space.

The proposal largely centres on 9 Wellington Place, which has been vacant for more than a decade.

But it includes a rear extension to 7 Wellington Place, currently home to interior design consultancy, Atelier Design and ground floor tenant, an Oasis gaming outlet.

While much of the original internal fabric of the building has been lost through successive alterations by past owners, the planning process involved consultation with the Historic Environment Division.

After a number of reviews, the HED signed off on the plans.

Approving the proposal, officials at Belfast City Council said: “The proposed works are considered a welcomed restoration to a prominent listed building in the city centre and relevant consultees are satisfied.”
