BELFAST telecoms firm Barclay Communications has announced a £3 million contract with the University of Cambridge.

The deal will see the company offer mobile solutions across the university’s 31 constituent colleges and 150 departments. Specially, the Belfast firm will provide more than 5,000 mobile connections, enabling Cambridge to support users located overseas and boost its remote learning capabilities.

It’s among the biggest contracted landed in the 24-year history of Barclay Communications.

Managing director Britt Meaghey said the firm underwent a rigorous tendering process, competing against some of the world’s biggest communication providers.

“Securing this contract is a testament that Barclay Communications is responding to the new and fast-changing communication needs of businesses everywhere, with the most efficient, innovative and cost-effective solutions.”

The telecoms boss said the impact of Covid-19 had fast-tracked tech development in the communications sector by five to 10 years.

“While we have continued to provide our customers with the highest level of support, it is evident that the needs of our customers have changed dramatically in recent months,” he said.

“They now look to us to underpin how their business communicates as reliably and effectively as possible in these new times using the latest technologies and services available.

“This is no different for an esteemed educational institution like Cambridge and we are delighted to work in partnership with them.”
