A LISBURN-based refrigerated transport company has increased its turnover by eight per cent in the past year to almost £22 million, with a period of "sustained organic growth" to come.

McCulla Ireland, who have operations in both Lisburn and Dublin has also increased its profit before tax to £1.2 million and grown its staff numbers by a quarter in the year ending December 31, 2016.

The temperature controlled logistics firm, who operates across the UK and Ireland and has almost 50 years of experience in the industry, said it is "satisfied" with the performance over the year.

The company directors believe the infrastructure is now in place for a period of "sustained organic growth".

"Following the growth in recent trading periods the company has continued to make significant investments in fixed assets during the year including purchase of eight transport units. This will enable the company to focus on its growth strategy," they said.

"Our strategy is based on providing customers with a range of cost-effective and quality assured solutions for delivering and storing products. This strategy is being applied in growing markets throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe to enable the company to grow revenue in future years. The company infrastructure is now well equipped for a period of sustained organic growth."

Over the year staff numbers increased from 160 to 201, bringing the company's annual wage bill up by over £600,000 to £6.2 million. This recruitment drive shows no sign of slowing with McCulla currently advertising for new drivers in response to business growth.

Looking ahead and the Lisburn company, which has a fleet offering 90,000 sq ft of chilled and frozen storage, said the impact of Brexit will be "monitored closely".

"The broadly positive economic environment in which the company operates is expected to continue during the next 12 months, with any uncertainty surrounding the potential impact of Brexit on both the local and regional economy monitored closely by the board. The company is committed to proactively working closely with key stakeholders and the local business community to ensure that a smooth transition can be achieved."
