ONE of Belfast's longest-established bars Robinsons has submitted plans to create a new smoking area at the rear of the popular watering hole.

Robinson's Bar on Great Victoria Street has announced new proposals to enhance the Victorian Grade B listed building through the enlargement of the second floor balcony at the back of the pub to house an outdoor smoking area.

According to the plans submitted by owners Wine Inns, who operate off-license chain Winemark and Belfast bar The Eglantine, the proposal "seeks to improve the amenity of patrons with an enlargement of the second floor balcony and a minor addition to the immediate interior with a glazed bay and door".

The existing large window is to removed to accommodate this, with the proposed balcony to be constructed of steel framework sympathetic to the industrial styling of the existing facade.

Access to the new balcony will be from the second floor, with no alterations to the ground level entrance.

The owners say the work will not compromise the architectural integrity of the existing building, with the rear facade a contemporary addition to the building in the 1980s and now accommodates a public entrance to the 'Fibber Magee' bar within the complex.

According to the proposals, submitted last month, the work will "add to the character and streetscape quality of Blackstaff Square and Keyland's Place as a whole".

Established since 1895, Robinsons now houses five venues under one roof - a saloon, bistro, traditional Irish pub Fibbers, karaoke bar BT1 and an upstairs pool loft.
