PROFITS at Co Down-based Mulgrew Haulage increased more than five-fold last year.

The Dromore company posted bottom line profits of £473,618 for the 12 months to March 2015 on a turnover of £18.7 million - up 10.7 per cent from 16.9 per cent last year.

The company specialises in haulage, storage and distribution across and Ireland and Britain.

It was founded in 1973 by Dermot Mulgrew and is still run by the family.

Its clients include several blue chip companies, particularly in the soft drinks and alcoholic beverages sectors.

In the strategic report filed with annual accounts at Companies House in Belfast, directors said they "consider the profit on ordinary activities before taxation to be satisfactory in the light of difficult trading conditions".

"Performance in the sector is affected by general economic conditions and specific factors such as fuel prices," they added.

Directors did not recommend the payment of a final dividend, however £120,000 was paid out in the interim.

The firm grew staff numbers from 144 to 160 on average over the year making the overall cost of wages £4.6m.
