One of the north's hardest working couples have been honoured with a hospitality gong for outstanding contribution to the industry at the prestigious Janus Awards.

Niall and Joanne McKenna of the James Street South Group received the accolade for their pioneering work in the hospitality sector, which they accepted at the 20th anniversary Janus awards bash in the La Mon Hotel attended by more than 450 guests.

And the James Street South Group - which includes Hadskis, The Bar & Grill and the Cookery School, with new venue Cast & Crew due to open later this month creating 55 jobs - had a double celebration at the event when Bar & Grill head chef Carl Johannesson clinched the best restaurant chef title.

The awards reward individuals and companies exemplifying excellence and who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry in Northern Ireland and enhanced its reputation abroad.

Niall said he and Joanne were honoured to be recognised for their work, adding: "We are passionate about showcasing the Northern Ireland food offering, and to receive this award is fantastic as we prepare to open our fourth restaurant.

"Investment in the hospitality infrastructure here is vital if we are to compete on a world stage, and initiatives like the Apprentice Scheme will help guarantee the next generation of excellence in the industry."

Other recipients included Andrew Phelan, general manager of Lough Erne Resort (hotelier of the year) and Daryl Shields from Flame Restaurant, who was awarded restaurateur of the year.

Michael Cafolla, chairman of the Institute of Hospitality Northern Ireland Branch, said: “The Janus Awards are now held in such high esteem that we had over 150 nominations this year.

"Each nominee can be justly proud to have been chosen and worthy of recognition as an outstanding colleague and employee. All our finalists can be proud of their achievement and who have risen to the top of their category.”
