It's almost 120 years since The Alhambra in Belfast’s North Street played host to the first moving image screened in Northern Ireland.

To celebrate our love affair with film Cinema Day will takes place on August 28-29.

The Film Hub NI initiative, part of the Film Audience Network, has been described as "a pick-a-mix of film-related goodies".

Classics will be on offer at Queen's Film Theatre (QFT) from £1 and there will be a faculty lecture given by Helen Sloan, principle stills photographer with Game of Thrones.

There will be an alternative documentary mini-fest held by Second Chance Cinema and Portrush Film Theatre will be screening the seminal A Trip to the Moon directed by Geroge Méliés in 1902, followed by The Extraordinary Voyage documentary.

Fermanagh Film Club will be screening homegrown dystopian thriller The Survivalist followed by a Q and A from writer and director Stephen Fingleton.

Elsewhere, in just 24 hours across the north, there will be a range of historical talks, including The A-Z of Belfast Cinemas with Brian Henry Martin, documentaries, animations, screenings in weird and wonderful places, and much more.

Sara Gunn Smith of Film Hub NI said: “We’re delighted to be presenting the first ever Cinema Day in Northern Ireland as it provides the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the incredible 120 year old cinema heritage we have in this part of the world, as well as showcasing the great work of Film Hub NI members.

"Screenings, talks and family events are taking place in Belfast, Glengormley, Omagh, Enniskillen, Coleraine and Portrush, so there is plenty of opportunity for audiences of all ages to experience the magic of the silver screen in all its glory.

"It’s also an opportunity to visit new venues, find out about the film industry and learn about film heritage. We hope to see you there!”
