Have you finished Go Set a Watchman yet?

Jones said she wanted to read the novel again

While most of us haven’t got our hands on this highly anticipated book, one speed reader managed to read Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman in less than half an hour.

Anne Jones, a six time world speed reading champion, finished Go Set A Watchman in just 25 minutes and 31 seconds at Forum Books in Corbridge, Northumberland.

Jones, who has appeared on programmes such as The One Show and The Daily Politics as well as on Radio 2, said she loved the book and wanted to read it again.

She also dismissed fears about Atticus Finch – a recurring character from Lee’s previous novel To Kill A Mockingbird – becoming a racist, saying he was just tested in a different way and was still a loving father.

“I want to read it again, it’s great. It’s really funny in places and obviously it’s got a lot of serious things in it but I don’t think it’ll disappoint people, I think they will be thrilled. We’ve got more of Harper Lee and writing really well,” she said.

“If you haven’t read it and were put off by the aspect that Atticus may have changed a bit he hasn’t changed really.

“What’s happened is that he has been tested in a different way, the way that generation was, and he’s still the loving father of Jean Louise.”

She said her method is based around taking in sections of text at a time and using a pencil to run down the page from line to line.

Previously she read Dan Brown’s Inferno in 41 minutes on Chris Evans’ radio show and also helped a group of protesters who were attempting to read a huge pile of government consultation documents about HS2.
