AT ONCE funny and heartbreaking, Ed Waugh's one-man play Carrying David, based on the story of world boxing champion Glenn McCrory, is being produced in Northern Ireland next month by David Hull Promotions.

The play has already toured the north east of England to rave reviews and is coming to Downpatrick Arts Centre (November 8); The Old Court House, Antrim (November 9); and the Lyric Theatre (studio), Belfast, on November 10.

Inspired by the love of his terminally ill brother, David, Glenn McCrory (with ancestors from Co Tyrone) made boxing history when he clinched the Cruiserweight Champion of the World title in June 1989, becoming the first world boxing champion from England's north east.

Waugh, who wrote the play – which stars Tyneside actor Micky Cochrane – based the script on Glenn's autobiography in which the boxer credits his adopted brother David's own fighting spirit against muscle-wasting disease Friedreich’s ataxia, as the reason why, despite setbacks, he never gave up on boxing glory.

"This is a magnificent story and the response has been wonderful," Waugh says. "Micky Cochrane [has been] sublime and received a standing ovation at every venue."
