Okja on Netflix

MEET your new hero – Mija in the Netflix Original Film, Okja.

From South Korean director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer), this satirical anti-corporate farce / sweet coming of age story revolves around a young farm girl's mission to save her genetically engineered 'super-pig' friend – the titular Okja.

Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun) and her grandpa Hee-Bong (Byun Hee-Bong) were among a handful of farmers selected to raise an experimental new breed of animal created by agribusiness giant The Mirando Corporation – run by CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) – as part of a publicity stunt designed to introduce the world to a new and highly lucrative factory-farmed food source.

After 10 years, Okja and the other super-pigs are to be plucked from their homes and paraded through Manhattan, where the finest example will be selected by zany TV animal expert Dr Johnny (Jake Gyllenhaal).

However, fearing the worst for her giant, Hippopotamus-esque pal, Mija decides to rescue Okja from the disparate group of capitalists, demonstrators and consumers battling to take control of her.

Co-written by Bong and journalist Jon Ronson, the film is a Netflix exclusive that deftly blends humour and poignancy to explore the bond between man and animal.
