Gary Carson: Ryan Moore's star quality can brighten up an ordinary Curragh card

Ryan Moore is in action at the Curragh on Thursday and that looks significant on an ordinary enough looking midweek card.

He takes the ride on a couple of juveniles in the first two races and it wouldn't be a surprise if the two Aidan O'Brien-trained runners collected.

Psalm in particular makes plenty of appeal in the colts and geldings maiden over seven furlongs, having shaped nicely on his debut at Newmarket recently.

The Sea The Stars colt, a full-brother to a Listed winner in Abu Dhabi, was fourth first time up, just fading in the closing stages when easy to back.

He is entitled to step forward a nice bit from that effort and the Irish Guineas entry is fancied to open his account now.

Kortez Bay probably sets the standard in the race, off a mark of 84, after some solid efforts.

Sheila Lavery's charge wasn't beaten far when fifth in the valuable Ballyhane Stakes at Naas in August and looks well worth his rating judged on that performance.

In the opener O'Brien gives Moore the leg up on newcomer Everlasting and the Kingman filly may be good enough to make a winning start.

She is a half-sister to a smart horse in Adelaide River, who was runner-up in the Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris this summer.

Being by Kingman she is bred to have a bit more toe than her sibling.

The form horse in that race looks to be the Ger Lyons-trained Wendla, who was runner-up in Cork a fortnight ago.

Juddmonte's daughter of Ulysses chased home Ezeliya that day, who went to post a short price having shaped well in a strong Leopardstown maiden first time so that form looks solid.

The handicaps on the card look difficult but one that catches the eye if the Joanna Morgan-trained Merisi Diamond in the 47-65 event over seven furlongs.

He was the subject of a serious gamble at Navan eight days ago when backed from 33/1 into 6/1 favourite but unfortunately for his supporters nothing went right.

Having been bumped leaving the stalls he found himself out the back and running keenly. He looked to have a bit to do in mid-division when slipping up under two furlongs from home and it looks fair to forgive him the run.

The confidence that was shown in him is noteworthy though and in a moderate race he may be worth supporting off a very low rating.
