Death of a sporting great

Sir Peter O'Sullevan, who died yesterday at the age of 97, will always be remembered as the voice of racing and deserves to be regarded as among the greatest sporting broadcasters in history.

The Co Kerry-born commentator had a long career in newspapers, was a hugely successful racehorse owner and also helped to raise enormous amounts of money for animal-related charities.

However, his enduring role with the BBC, and particularly his association with the Aintree Grand National, gave him legendary status and he will be equally missed by committed racing fans and part-time punters across these islands.
