GARDAÍ investigating an alleged fatal assault at one of Co Dongal's most popular tourist spots have arrested a woman in her 20s.

The arrest on Monday was carried out as part of the ongoing probe into the death of a man whose body was recovered from the Sliabh Liag area on July 3.

The body of Robert Wilkin, also known as Robin Wilkin, was found in water below the sea cliffs following an extensive search.

Originally from Co Tyrone, Mr Wilkin was a lorry driver aged in his 60s, and had been due to stand trial on drug smuggling charges relating to his vehicle being stopped at Coquelles Channel Tunnel in August 2021.

Heroin (63kg) and 32kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of £5.7m, was recovered from his lorry. Mr Wilkin had been due to stand trial over the drug seizure in October.

A Gardaí spokesperson said the woman arrested on Monday was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, and she remained in custody on Monday evening.

In July, 38-year-old Alan Vial, of of Drumanoo Head in the Killybegs area, appeared in court in Co Donegal charged with the murder of Mr Wilkin.
