A man aged in his thirties has been re-arrested in connection with the discovery of the body of Co Tyrone man Robin Wilkin in the sea at the Sliabh Liag cliffs.

It is understood the man was arrested in Letterkenny early on Thursday and is being questioned at Ballyshannon Garda station.

A Garda spokesman said the arrest formed part of the ongoing investigation into an alleged assault that reportedly took place in the Sliabh Liag area of Co Donegal between Saturday June 24 and Sunday June 25.

The body of Mr Wilkin, who was in his sixties, was found in the sea between Slabh Liag and Killybegs on July 3 following a week-long investigation into claims that he went into the sea after an assault.

A man and woman were arrested as part of the investigation but later released without charge.

It is understood the man has now been re-arrested.

It subsequently emerged that Mr Wilkin, also known as Robert, was due to appear in court later this year on drug smuggling charges.

A lorry driver, he was questioned in August 2021 in connection with the discovery of drugs at the Channel Tunnel. Border Force officers discovered 63 kilos of heroin and 32 kilos of cocaine hidden in two pallets of Belgian chocolate which were to be delivered to Maidstone, Kent.

Mr Wilkin was charged in connection with the drug seizure and was released on bail when he appeared at Folkestone magistrate’s court in August 2021. He was due to stand trial on the charges in October this year.

It is understood his body was released to his family this week following a post mortem examination.
