A foot bridge over the River Lagan in Belfast is to reopen to the public this week following extensive repairs.

Located on the tow path at Lagan Meadows, it was closed off last December after it was deemed unsafe following an inspection ordered by Belfast City Council.

Repair work got underway in July on the bridge, which allows walkers to access the popular park area.

During its closure period, walkers and cyclists were diverted away from it in order to cross the river.

Ahead of the repair work, there had been confusion over who owned it following the transfer of parts of the old Castlereagh borough to Belfast City Council in 2015, which contributed to the delays in repairing the wooden structure.

South Belfast SDLP MP Claire Hanna is among those to cycle along the tow path, and had called for the bridge to be reopened to the public as soon as possible.

Following news that it will officially open on Friday, Ms Hanna posted an image of herself at the bridge to X (formerly Twitter), with the caption: "Brown’s Bridge at the Tow Path is up," adding it was "browner than ever".
