A man accused of trying to kill his partner in Co Down has died in jail.

James Carlisle (42) of Harbour Road in Kilkeel was found dead in his cell at Maghaberry Prison on Friday.

His death comes just days before he was due to appear in court charged with attempted murder.

He previously appeared before Newry Magistrates Court via video-link on July 3 facing charges of attempted murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, causing actual bodily harm and common assault.

Police had said that the charges were related to a domestic incident in Co Down on June 30.

On Saturday, the Northern Ireland Prison Service confirmed that a 42-year-old man had died in custody on Friday.

“His next of kin has been informed," a spokesperson said.

"As is standard practice, the PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been informed.

"The Prison Service would like to extend its sympathy to the family of the man at this difficult time.”

It is understood the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Carlisle, who is oiginally from Lurgan, Co Armagh, has a lengthy criminal record, including pleading guilty in 2007 to assault and possession of an offensive weapon at Craigavon Crown Court.

He was also charged with the murder of Peter McNally in Craigavon in October 2001, but pleaded guilty to wounding the teenager, who was shot dead by two masked gunmen as he slept in a chair in a house at Westacres in the town.

In March 2016, he was shot four times as he was picking his child up from school in Lurgan.
