A Co Down man has been remanded into custody accused of trying to kill his partner.

Appearing at Newry Magistrates Court by videolink from police custody, 42-year-old James Carlisle confirmed his date of birth and that he understood the six charges against him.

Carlisle, originally from the Lurgan area but now with an address on the Harbour Road in Kilkeel, faces accusations of attempted murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, causing actual bodily harm and common assault, all said to be aggravated by domestic abuse and alleged to have been committed on June 30.

He also faces two counts of witness intimidation on the same date.

The charges follow a domestic incident in the Kilkeel area.

In court, a defence lawyer said he was not applying for bail at this stage but asked for the case to be adjourned to July 19 when one would be made.

District Judge Anne Marshall agreed and remanding Carlisle into custody, she adjourned the case.
