POLICE last night stood down a search in Co Derry following reports that a paraglider had gotten into difficulty.

Ground and aerial searches were carried out in the Drumahoe area from around 12.30pm yesterday as police appealed for help with information in establishing "the identity and wellbeing" of the paraglider.

A base was understood to have been established in the former Desmond’s factory site, between Ardlough Road and Fincairn Road, where emergency services were joined by voluntary groups.

But in a updated statement last night, police said "an extensive search of the Drumahoe area has been stepped down".

"The multi-agency search operation involving police, NI Fire and Rescue Service and Foyle Search and Rescue was prompted by an emergency call from a member of the public this morning," police said.

"They reported seeing a paraglider who appeared to be in difficulty.

"The ground and aerial searches did not find anything untoward.

"We would like to thank the public for their assistance to date and if anyone has any information that could help establish the wellbeing of the paraglider, please call us on 101."
