A man is in critical condition after being assaulted in north Belfast.

The victim, who is in his 20s, was attacked in the Antrim Street area of Carrick Hill on Sunday.

Police last night said two women, aged 63 and 49 years old have been arrested on suspicion of offences relating to the investigation. Both are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

A 41-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is being questioned at Musgrave PSNI station in Belfast.

Police say medics were called to the area shortly after 9pm where they found the man with serious injuries to his face and head.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Detective Inspector Tom Phillips last night said “this was a particularly vicious attack, which has left the victim in a critical condition in hospital”.

The street where the attack took place remained sealed off yesterday and police confirmed last night that searches have also been carried out in the Antrim Street area.

Local Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee said his thoughts are with the victim.

“Carrick Hill is a tightly knit strong community and residents are shocked at the severity of this incident,” he said.

“If anyone has information relating to this attack they should come forward.”

SDLP councillor Paul McCusker said his thoughts are with the victim.

"Nobody deserves this type of assault and local people who witnessed it have been left traumatised," he said.
