Motorbike racer Ryan Farquhar has been returned to intensive care after being injured in a crash at the North West 200.

The Dungannon rider was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital following a crash with fellow racer Dan Cooper in the Vauxhall Supertwin race on May 12.

The Belfast Trust said that Farquhar was seriously ill after suffering chest and pelvic injuries and the 40-year-old was in intensive care at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

His condition was described as stable on May 16 and he was moved out of intensive care and into a general ward of the Royal.

However, he has since been returned to intensive care.

A Belfast Trust spokesman said last night: "He has returned to ICU and he is seriously ill."

Farquhar, who has won five races at the North West 200, retired from the sport in 2012 following the death of his uncle Trevor Ferguson at the Manx Grand Prix in the Isle of Man.

However, he resumed his road racing career in 2014.
