Man dies following rescue from sea after Belfast to Liverpool ferry incident

A three-hour search took place on Saturday after the alarm was raised over a missing passenger

Belfast Harbour has announced a £15m investment at its Victoria Terminal 2 (VT2), which currently services Stena Line's popular Belfast to Liverpool route.
Stena Line offers a ferry sailing from Belfast Harbour to Birkenhead.

A man has died after being airlifted from the sea by the Coastguard following an incident on a ferry travelling between Belfast and Liverpool.

The alarm was raised at around 8.15am on Saturday after a report of a missing person on the overnight Belfast to Birkenhead Stena Line ferry.

A search of the water got underway, involving HM Coastguard and the RNLI.

A Coastguard spokesperson said a helicopter from Caernarfon in north Wales joined the search along with RNLI lifeboat teams.

“A man was airlifted from the water by the HM Coastguard helicopter at about 11.20am, transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital,” they said,

“Crosby Coastguard Rescue Team assisted by securing a helicopter landing site. Merseyside Police were informed.”



A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed a 44-year-old man died in hospital. They added the death is the death is not being treated as suspicious and the man’s next of kin have been informed.

A Stena Line spokesperson said they could not comment on the incident.
