Man accused of throwing petrol bombs and explosive devices at police in Derry is refused bail.

A MAN accused of throwing petrol bombs and explosive devices at police during July disturbances in Derry has been refused bail.

John Paul Moore (23) of Carleton Court in the city appeared yesterday at the magistrates court.

A police officer told the court Moore, who was wearing a make-shift mask, was caught on CCTV involved in the disturbances in Fahan Street.

A police officer told the court that during the rioting two improvised explosive devices made out of a aerosol can with a banger attached were thrown at police by Moore.

The officer, who opposed bail, said he was identified when he removed his mask after he was hit by a plastic bullet.

The court heard that during interviews Moore generally made no comment but when asked about the explosive attack said he "didn't give a f**k."

Defence barrister Stephen Mooney accepted his client was facing "exceptionally serious offences" and said Moore had not applied for bail until the situation in the city had quietened down.

The barrister said Moore had no political motivation, was inebriated at the time and was someone who "could hardly spell IED".

District Judge Barney McElholm said Moore had "a poor record that was getting worse all the time" adding anyone who threw petrol bombs and devices at police did not deserve bail before ordering Moore to appear again on November 8.
