ULSTER’S All-Ireland wheelchair hurling champions showcased their skills in an exhibition game in Madden, county Armagh yesterday.

The sport – which was showcased during the All-Ireland Unlimited Roads Bowls finals – is becoming increasingly popular and more easily accessible throughout the province thanks to the work of the Ulster Council over the last two years.

Ulster Council PRO Michael Geoghegan explained: “Wheelchair hurling has been going for a couple of years in Ulster and two people have been appointed to look after it – we have a coach in Donegal who is taking charge of the north-west and then Shane Donnelly will be working in the other counties.

“We want to make it more accessible to people. It’s a growing thing in the GAA nationally but Ulster would probably seen as being at the forefront of it at the minute.”

Ulster retained their All-Ireland title in Boyle, county Roscommon last month when they beat Connacht, Leinster and Munster.
