Saffrons sunk by Lake county in Inniskeen

ANTRIM'S All-Ireland hopes were dashed last Saturday when they lost out to Westmeath in the U16 C final at Inniskeen Grattan's GAC, Monaghan.

Kirsten Edgar opened the scoring for the Saffrons with a goal from a long distance free, but Westmeath hit back with two frees before Niamh McCarty raised the green flag to extend the Lake county's lead. Kirsten Edgar and Shannon Darragh hit back for Antrim to bring them to within three points, but a goal right on the stroke of half-time saw Westmeath lead 2-5 to 1-2.

The second half saw Westmeath put Antrim under great pressure and they added to their tally to run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 7-11 to 1-2.

LOUGHIEL retained the Ramble Inn Intermediate Camogie Championship with a 1-14 to 2-6 win over Croghan.

The Shamrocks took an early 1-3 lead before Creggan responded with a Fiona Maguire free. Therese McKinley, Hannagh Devlin and Christine Laverty led the Loughgiel attack as Megan Boyle hit over two frees to extend their lead.

Ciara Dobbin pointed twice for the Shamrocks before Fiona Maguire converted a free and a 45 for Creggan. Ciara McCollum pointed from long range as Eleanor McConville and Ruby Marie Rice both pointed to leave it 1-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Early points from Christine Laverty, Hannagh Devlin and Megan Boyle saw Loughgiel extend their lead. Creggan applied pressure to the Loughgiel defence and were soon rewarded when Ciara McCollum raised the green flag twice, but they could never get back on level terms as Loughgiel ran out five-point victors.

BALLELA claimed the Down Camogie Intermediate Championship with a 7-5 to 3-3 over Kilclief Ben Dearg.

Gráinne Cassidy opened the scoring for Kilclief with a second minute point, but Orla Magee responded for Ballela with a great long-distance point from an awkward angle.

Ciara Magee grabbed a goal after some great build up play by Joanne Branniff and Ballela hit over another two points before Kilclief’s Gráinne Cassidy found the net for her team. Orla Magee raised the green flag once again for Ballela as they led 4-7 to 2-2 going into half-time.

Colleen Reilly found the net for Kilcief, but Aoibhne O’Neill finished the game off with another two points from frees to give Ballela an impressive win.
