Gavin Bazunu: No chance for France’s two goals. Made a fantastic save to deny Tchouameni a second goal from distance. 6

Alan Browne: Emerged from Paris with a lot of credit. Did well in his duels with Mbappe before being moved into midfield. 6

Enda Stevens: Had a couple of small victories over Dembele, but the French winger did cause him a lot of problems too and was caught in too many one-on-one situations. Injury ended his night at the break. 5

Nathan Collins: Saved a couple of certain French goals in the second half, notably from Griezmann. Dealt well with high balls, but the French were too crafty to keep feeding the bear. 7

Shane Duffy: Returned after a year away and dealt well with anything high that came into the Irish penalty area, but the slick movement of the French was on another level. 6

John Egan: The Irish captain was secure for most of the night – the danger was mostly in front of him. Stayed disciplined. 6

Josh Cullen: Kept having to look over this shoulder to locate Griezmann. A thankless task and might have benefited from a double defensive pivot to hold the French midfield. Picked up a booking. 6

Jason Knight: Put in a fantastic shift, winning balls back in his own half of the field and making brave charges forward with it, but tired in the second half. 6

Jayson Molumby: Produced a typical Molumby performance: full of energy, won a few balls back in key areas, but didn’t threaten the French. Withdrawn midway through the second half, probably to save his legs for Sunday. 5

Chiedozie Ogbene: Tentative in the opening half when he had chances to take the French defenders on. Had two efforts on goal and was unlucky not to score. 6

Adam Idah: Broke the off-side trap after France went two up which led to Ogbene’s headed effort that was saved. Might have done better in his hold-up play. 5

Subs:

James McClean: Dembele showed him his dancing feet and McClean couldn’t keep up. 5

Dara O’Shea: Had Mbappe for company and was on the back foot a lot. 5

Will Keane: Injured not long after coming on.

Aaron Connolly: Never got much change from the French defence. 5

Ebosele Festy: Not on long enough to be rated.
