Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah has become the most expensive African of all time after completing his £34.3million switch from Roma to Liverpool.
The 25-year-old returns to England, where he previously had an unsuccessful stint with Chelsea, as the Reds' first major signing of the summer.
Here we look at Liverpool's previous big-money moves and how they fared at Anfield...
ANDY CARROLL - £35MILLION
The reaction to selling Fernando Torres to Chelsea for £50million in 2011 was to spend the bulk of it on 22-year-old Newcastle striker Carroll.
The two had enjoyed fine careers with the clubs they departed but both flopped in new surroundings, with Carroll lasting just 18 months on Merseyside before being sent on loan to West Ham, who he eventually joined in a deal nearly £20million cheaper than the one which saw him move to Liverpool in the first place.
CHRISTIAN BENTEKE - £32.5MILLION
Having lost Luis Suarez the summer before, and after selling Raheem Sterling a few days earlier, Liverpool splashed the cash again on a physical striker when triggering Benteke's release clause at Aston Villa.
The Belgian had managed double figures in each of his three Premier League seasons, and though he scored nine times in his solitary campaign at Anfield, he was less suited to the system when Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the helm, and was offloaded to Crystal Palace for an initial £27million.
SADIO MANE - £30MILLION
Last summer Mane became the latest to tread the well-worn path from Southampton to Merseyside in a deal understood to be worth £30million.
The Senegalese was a huge success in his maiden campaign, winning the club's player of the year and players' player of the year accolades having netted 13 Premier League goals to finish as the Reds' joint top scorer.
Liverpool's biggest dip in form during the season in January also coincided with Mane's absence at the African Nations Cup.
ROBERTO FIRMINO - £29MILLION
The fee Liverpool parted with to land Firmino from Hoffenheim in 2015 was described as "brutal" by ex-Reds defender Markus Babbel, and the Brazilian took some time to adapt before finding his feet under Klopp's watch.
The German gained success deploying Firmino through the middle and he found the net 12 times last season, scoring winners in back-to-back fixtures against Stoke and West Brom in April as Liverpool held on to finish in the top four and secure Champions League qualification.
ADAM LALLANA - £25MILLION
One of Southampton's most successful academy graduates was prised away from the south coast after the World Cup in 2014 in a window which also saw Saints team-mates Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren join Liverpool.
Although he arrived way before Klopp, Lallana is another who has thrived under the German's guidance and he was rewarded for his fine performances with a new contract earlier this year.
