SINGER Sinéad O'Connor has hit out at her former husband John Reynolds just hours after she was found by police in Chicago after having been reported missing.

In a strongly-worded open letter on her Facebook page, O'Connor criticised music producer Reynolds, the father of her eldest son Jake.

The Co Dublin singer was found safe on Monday, hours after police in suburban Chicago issued an appeal to trace her after she did not return from a bike ride on Sunday morning.

Wilmette police spokesman Eric Peterson said O'Connor has been found but did not say where, only that she "is safe and no longer considered a missing or endangered person".

On Sunday, the singer wrote on Facebook that her third child Shane had been taken into the care of family agency Tulsa in the Republic.

O'Connor, who has a history of mental health difficulties, wrote on Facebook in December that she had been detained in hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The singer had sparked fears for her wellbeing a month earlier when she wrote another Facebook post claiming she had taken an overdose.

She was later found safe and taken to hospital.
