Irish acting talent leads Screen Actors Guild nominations

IRISH acting talent is leading the charge with the release of nominations for this year's Screen Actors Guild Awards. 

Irish-American actress Saoirse Ronan has been nominated in the outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role category for her performance as Eilis in Brooklyn.

Other actresses in the running are Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, Helen Mirren and Sarah Silverman.

Michael Fassbender, whose mother hails from Larne, Co Antrim, has been nominated for his role in Steve Jobs, in the outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role category.

Fassbender, who starred in Hunger about the life of Bobby Sands, is up against Bryan Cranston in Trumbo; Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant and Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl. Johnny Depp is also nominated in the same category for his portrayal of Irish-American gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger in Black Mass.

Meanwhile, American actor Peter Dinklage has been nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a dramaderies.

Dinklage plays Tyrion Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones, which is largely shot at various locations in Northern Ireland.

The Game of Thrones cast are also in line for an award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place in Los Angeles on January 30 and will actress Carol Burnett will also be presented with the 52nd Annual SAG Life Achievement Award.

:: Outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture: Beasts Of No Nation (Netflix), The Big Short (Paramount Pictures), Spotlight: Straight Outta Compton (Universal Pictures) and Trumbo (Bleecker Street)

:: Outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or miniseries: Idris Elba in Luther; Ben Kingsley in Tut; Ray Liotta in Texas Rising; Bill Murray in A Very Murray Christmas and Mark Rylance in Wolf Hall.

:: Outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or miniseries: Nicole Kidman in Grace of Monaco; Queen Latifah in Bessie; Christina Ricci in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles; Susan Sarandon in The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe and Kristen Wiig in The Spoils Before Dying.
