A GoFundMe set up for the man who stopped the knife attack in Dublin's Parnell street on Thursday has been set up, with donations reaching more €175,000 on Friday night.

Caio Benicio, a Deliveroo delivery driver in Dublin, was working when he saw a man attack a group of people outside of the Gaelscoil Colaiste Mhuire.

He then used his helmet as a weapon to stop the attacker who had already injured a woman and three young children.

The creator of the page, Paul Darcy, said in the GoFundMe: "The man's a hero and the least we can do is buy him a pint so I'm asking you to donate the price of a pint of Guinness in your local to Caio so that he knows the people of Dublin appreciate him."

Father-of-two Caio Benicio from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil moved to Ireland a year ago and intervened when he witnessed what he initially believed to be a fight on Parnell Street.

Speaking to RTÉ, he said: "I was working like a normal day. And I was passing by in Parnell Square when I saw…at first I thought it was a fight with a man and a woman. A normal fight like, you know, and I slowed down my motorcycle to see more closely what's happening."

He saw a woman who was "pulling the girl, you know. And she was very, very brave, you know, because you could get the girl from the man, and the little girl run away and the man he grabbed another one."

There has also been a GoFundMe page set up for the children and teaching assistant attacked in Dublin on Thursday.

The account under the name of Paul Mc, ha seen donations reach €70,000 with a target of €150,000 having been set.

An update on the page said: "We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the support and kindness we have received thus far, so thank you all so much for your donations.

"We have increased the goal so that we can continue to raise as much as possible for those affected by this horrific incident.

"Rest assured we will keep the fundraiser updated and will share exactly where the funds are going.

"Please continue to support in any way you can, and thank you all again you are helping more than you can ever imagine, thank you so much."
