GARDAÍ who stopped a weekend motorist in Donegal had been driving his car without road tax for more than 11 years.

The vehicle owner passed one of the Garda checkpoints put in place to deter unnecessary movement over the Easter weekend. The jeep was found to be have been last taxed in 2009.

A Garda spokesman said the vehicle, stopped outside Ballyshannon, was subsequently seized on the spot.

He said: “We understand that some matters cannot be dealt with at the moment but this is just not acceptable. Please ensure that your car is taxed and insured and in a roadworthy condition before taking to the roads.”

The spokesman said that as well as staffing checkpoints on all major roads around Ballyshannon and other parts of the county, some officers were patrolling local beauty spots by bicycle.

“Please continue to adhere to the public health measures and stay at home. We are out all over the county on patrol and will continue to conduct checkpoints in an attempt to keep you all safe,” the spokesman said.
