11-year-old dies in hospital after being struck by van in Buncrana

AN 11-year-old boy who died after being struck by a van in Co Donegal has been named as Dylan Kelly.

The schoolboy died at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital on Sunday after being injured in the collision near Buncrana on Friday evening.

He was one of five people killed in separate road accidents over the weekend.

The eldest of four children, Dylan was originally from Cabra in Dublin but moved to Buncrana with his family some years ago.

The collision happened while he was walking at Slavery Road in the Tullyarvan area at around 5.30pm on Friday.

He was initially taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry but was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood extended his sympathies to the boy’s family.

“It is heartbreaking that a young life with so much potential and many happy years ahead of him has been taken so soon,” he said.

Fianna Fáil councillor Rena Donaghey also said the tragedy has shocked the entire community in Buncrana but they would “rally around” Dylan’s family.
