GOLFER Shane Lowry has been named RTÉ `Sportsperson of the Year' following his first major title win in the 148th Open at Royal Portrush.

The Co Offaly man became the fifth Irish player to lift the Claret Jug in July and dedicated the award to Clara clubmate John Buckley - "a very good GAA man" - whose funeral he had attended earlier on Saturday.

Rhys McClenaghan from Co Down, who made history as the first Irish gymnast to medal at the world championships, was named Young Sportsperson of the Year for the second year running.

The 20-year-old from Newtownards claimed a bronze medal in the pommel horse and has qualified for the 2020 Olympics.

Former Dublin football boss Jim Gavin was also named Manager of the Year after overseeing an unprecedented five-in-a-row All-Ireland titles.
