FARMERS living near President Donald Trump's golf resort in Co Clare have been advised not to cut silage or spread slurry for the duration of his visit.

The US president arrived in the Republic yesterday afternoon.

He met Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at Shannon Airport and stayed overnight at his Doonbeg hotel and golf resort.

At a recent community meeting, farmers were advised not to spread slurry or cut silage while the president was at Doonbeg.

It is understood gardaí told residents that those who needed to cut silage could obtain special passes and contractors could be vetted.

Irish Farmers' Association chairman and suckler farmer Willie Hanrahan told the Irish Independent the president's visit would increase interest in the area.

"It’s not a big inconvenience," he said.

"The publicity Doonbeg will get is unbelievable so farmers will cope with this. This is the biggest boost that Doonbeg will get for generations."
