A League of Ireland footballer has revealed how his mother signed him up for a surprise appearance on Countdown.

Dinny Corcoran, a striker for Bohemian FC in Dublin, appeared on Channel 4 on Monday, just two hours after collecting the league's player of the month award.

The 30-year-old, who scored three goals in the opening three games of the season, came up short against an accomplished opponent on a scoreline of 97 to 50.

The conundrum at the end of the show read 'hobawards', an anagram of 'Bohs award'.

The footballer tweeted that he had tried to keep his appearance quiet "but I didn’t think so many people would be watching Channel 4 on a Monday afternoon".

"Unfortunately, I couldn’t get away with it, so I’m not looking forward to training tonight."

The footballer from Donabate, Co Dublin revealed that his mother was a big fan of Countdown and they watched it together growing up.

"She thought I was very good so she applied for me and I just happened to make it. They rang me to do a test over the phone and I passed it. It was that simple, then they booked the flights and I was on the show."
