GARDAÍ caught more than 470 drivers speeding on the Republic's roads on Thursday, including one motorcyclist travelling at almost 200km/h.

More than 101,900 vehicles were monitored during the day as part of a Christmas and New Year road safety campaign.

The fastest speed recorded was 198km/h (123mph) by a motorcyclist in a 100km/h zone at Drummindoo in Westport, Co Mayo.

A driver was also travelling at 122km/h (76mph) in a 50km/h zone at Mount Brown in Dublin city, and another at 109km/h (68mph) in a 60km/h zone in Dungarvan.

A further 400 drivers were caught speeding in the Republic on St Stephen's Day.

Meanwhile, figures obtained by the News Letter showed the highest recorded speed north of the border over an 18-month period was a driver who was clocked doing 151mph on the M2 motorway near Antrim.
