TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has indicated that US president-elect Donald Trump may visit Ireland in the near future.

Mr Kenny was one of nine world leaders to speak to the businessman-turned-politician within 24 hours of his shock US election victory.

Following their conversation, the taoiseach said the pair discussed the cultural, historical and economic links between Ireland and the US and the need to maintain them.

"He actually said himself that he hoped to visit Ireland some time, so let's see when the administration takes up office, what his schedule might be,” Mr Kenny added.

"I don't have any indication of his coming at an early date."

The Fine Gael leader will be in New York for a three-day trade visit early next month and is planning on staying in a hotel a short distance away from Mr Trump’s residence at Trump Tower. However, it is not thought a meeting between the two has been organised.

Over the summer, the president-elect was due to visit his gold course in Doonbeg, Co Clare, however he cancelled the trip at short notice.
