AND they're off. Thousands of runners are taking part in the Dublin Marathon.
The crowds had gathered at Fitzwilliam Square from early this morning to begin their 26.2 mile challenge. Almost 11,000 Irish and 4,500 international competitors - representing 62 nationalities - are taking part.
A record number of entrants - 15,216 people - are registered for the marathon, now in its 36th year.
Eliud Too from Kenya, who won last year's event, will be looking to defend his men’s title today. Fellow Kenyan Esther Macharia has also returned to defend her women's title.
Former Irish athlete Sonia O'Sullivan, who won the marathon 15 years ago, is competing again to raise money for the Irish Guide Dogs.
