THE SDLP and Sinn Féin have both welcomed the re-election of Jeremy Corbyn.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said his confirmation as Labour leader came at a "turbulent time in the politics of these islands as the Brexiteers seize control of the mechanics of government in Westminster".

"I look forward to working with the Labour leader as we continue to fight Brexit and promote the democratically stated will of people in Ireland."

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said: "Jeremy has been a stalwart friend to Ireland and of the Irish peace process for decades.

"He faces many challenges in the time ahead in confronting the right wing agenda of the Conservative government, not least in addressing the issue of Brexit."

Anna McAleavy, chair of the Labour Party in Northern Ireland, described the result as "brilliant news".

Asked why members had backed a leader who does not support their right to stand for election as Labour candidates in the north, she told The Irish News: "It is not just Jeremy who has not backed our right to stand - Owen Smith and many others didn't back it either.

"Dennis Skinner has now indicated his support for our right to stand and we will be having a fringe meeting here (at the party conference) in Liverpool this week to discuss the issue."

She added: "It is time for us to go forward. I cannot see that there will be another challenge to Corbyn's leadership."
