Former DUP councillor Jenny Palmer is among three Ulster Unionist candidates set to contest next year's assembly election in Lagan Valley.

Selected alongside Mrs Palmer, who defected to the UUP ranks earlier this year, are Lisburn and Castlereagh councillor Robbie Butler and Olive Mercer.

Mrs Palmer quit the DUP ahead of an internal disciplinary inquiry following high-profile claims that she had been ordered by a party special adviser to change the way she intended to vote at a Housing Executive Board meeting.

Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt said: "Lagan Valley is one of the constituencies where we will run three high calibre candidates and it says much about the strength of the local association that we had a very competitive selection process that leaves other very capable candidates in supporting roles on this occasion."
