A STAR of Derry Girls has said there is unlikely to be any spin-off from the hit Channel 4 sitcom as creator Lisa McGee has "moved on".

Tara-Lynne O’Neill, who played Ma Mary in the show's three seasons, said rumors of spin-offs were "just a bit of fun, but they ain’t gonna happen".

The Bafta and Emmy Award-winning series came to an end last year with a final episode showing the characters voting in the 1998 Good Friday Agreement referendum.

Since the finale, there has been speculation of a spin-off show for characters, and also a Derry Girls movie.

Lisa McGee said during a screening of Season 3 episodes in Derry last year that she wanted to write a sitcom with Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah - played by Kathy Kiera Clarke - setting up a private detective agency in the city.

The writer also said "you never say never" when asked about a possible Derry Girls movie.

However, Ms O'Neill told the Sunday Life newspaper that fans were unlikely to see characters from the series return to screens.

“I heard about the crime-fighting idea and I did laugh but no, Lisa has moved on, she has left Derry Girls behind," the Belfast actress said.

"The joy and the success the show bought her is allowing her to explore more things she loves with her new projects."

She added: "I think the last episode about the Good Friday Agreement was absolutely beautiful, and I was extremely proud to be part of it, it felt like a natural end."

Earlier this year, actress Siobhán McSweeney, who played Sister Michael, also suggested a rumored movie was unlikely, as the show had "left all the characters in a really good place".

Lisa McGee is now working on a new show for Channel 4, titled How To Get To Heaven From Belfast, which is described as a "comedy thriller" about three former school friends reuniting in their late 30s following the death of another friend.

Channel 4 has said the show will follow the characters as they become "embroiled in a dark and twisted mystery".
