Two GAA clubs in Co Derry are joining forces to hold a silent vigil for peace in Gaza later this weekend.

Members of Dungiven-based St Canice’s Ladies Gaelic Football Club and St Patrick's Camogie Club, have organised the vigil as  casualties in the war-torn region topped more than 11,000.

Tricia Harkin, a spokeswoman for the organizers, said the women of Dungiven, “along with their families, friends and entire community”, will meet at 9.30am on Saturday at St Canice's GAA car park.

“We will walk a lap of the town and finish in the castle car park, where we will line out in the form of ‘peace’, where drone and aerial footage will be taken,” she said.

We encourage the whole community  to attend wearing only white - sheets, pillow cases for the wee ones - to symbolise the need for peace in the Middle East and an immediate ceasefire.”

Ms Harkin said no political displays will be allowed.

“This is a non-political protest and no political paraphernalia is permitted,” she said.

“This vigil is being organised in a community that has been impacted by conflict and still dealing with the trauma associated with it.

“There can only be a peaceful resolution and a ceasefire must be called immediately to allow for peaceful negotiations to take place.

“We ask for massive support at this time from the entire community.”

Ms Harkin said there will also be a bucket collection for registered charity Let's Change Tomorrow in aid of Gaza.
